Reading and Writing 2

ur Reading and Writing 2 class is designed for native English-speaking children who are already familiar with all the basic phonic sounds and are ready to build on their reading and writing skills. At this stage, they have begun to read and write simple words and sentences and are ready to develop their skills further. In this class, students engage in fun, interactive activities that help solidify their understanding of phonics while introducing more complex language concepts.

Ages 5-6

Key activities and topics include:

• Word Games: These are playful and engaging games that help children practice blending sounds and building words. Games can include rhyming challenges, word searches, or memory games.

• Cut and Stick Exercises: These hands-on activities allow children to match words with pictures, sort words by categories (such as rhyming words or consonant blends), or build sentences by cutting and pasting words from a word bank.

• Rhyming Words: Children explore rhyming pairs to improve phonological awareness and deepen their understanding of word patterns.

• Consonant Blends: Students learn to blend two or more consonants together, like "cl" in "clay" or "st" in "stop," to build more complex words.

• Magic E: The "magic e" rule (or silent e rule) teaches children that when a word ends in "e," the vowel before it often has a long sound (e.g., "cap" becomes "cape").

• Silent Letters: Children begin to recognize and learn common silent letters in words, such as the "k" in "knight" or the "w" in "write."

• Spelling Challenges: Students are introduced to the fun and tricky aspects of English spelling, including irregular spellings and patterns.

Reading and Writing 2 focuses on building a strong foundation for reading and writing while encouraging curiosity and a love of language. Through play and exploration, children gain the skills they need to become confident readers and writers.

My son (6) has attended the English classes here since summer 2023 and absolutely loves it. We weren't sure which level he would be in at first and the school were really flexible, trying two different classes and we were able to have some private tuition to fill in the gaps. The classes are engaging and fun, with movement, games and drama to bring the language to life. He's made so much progress in a really short time and even likes doing his English homework! As a parent, I am regularly informed about what the kids are learning and how I can help and we're often invited into the classroom to watch short plays at the end of term which is lovely. We drive 30 minutes to get to Custom Kids, so I wasn't sure about it at first, but am am so glad we signed up, it's worth the drive. I would really recommend the school for kids of all ages.
